My mission is to recognize and celebrate the years- in some cases decades of friendship, respect, and admiration I have for people throughout different parts of my life. I want to express gratitude in a tangible, material, and lasting way.
My vision is to help build a world where expressing gratitude is a daily habit, and the individuals I love are fully aware of where they stand in my life. I want to create a ripple effect in which the respective communities they serve will flourish in an environment of appreciation and positive reinforcement.
The origin of the "Artichoke" terminology is my old AOL internet handle from 2001, ToxicArtichoke. Toxic came from System of a Down's second studio album Toxicity which was released that year. The album had such an impression on me on multiple levels that it is my favorite album of all time to this day. In spite of this album making a huge impact on shaping who I am, I have dropped the "toxic"- as not to be misconstrued that I'm embracing negative energy.
Artichoke has a slightly more philosophical meaning. In addition to being a delicious food, the Artichoke is largely misunderstood. Artichokes are actually beautiful flowers, but we indulge in their decadent buds before they have a chance to bloom. When we envision an artichoke, what comes to mind is the bud that has not yet bloomed. I identify with the artichoke in many ways- one being the seemingly endless layers. It is complex, prickly on the tips as a (presumable) defense mechanism. The exterior is tough yet visually intriguing. Peeling back the layers is labor-intensive but once you get to the heart, you find a tender and enriching core.
I aspire to be an artichoke to everyone who touches my life- who takes the time to peel back the layers, has the patience to deal with the discomfort of my spikes- to bring out the very best in me. I want to reward and acknowledge those individuals who have- even if inadvertently- inspired me to do my own internal work. These individuals have helped me sit in the discomfort of my own demons, and have seen my tender heart at times when I myself could not.
Yes, I know.
